ON THE FLY:  Paul Sequira was again commended upon a fine issue of ON THE FLY.  This fine publication will continue to be available to members and the public through e-mail to members and web site to all.  Should our fishing reports become highly valued information, we may explore “members only access.”  That is not currently a problem!   Web site has been a significant recruiting resource.

WEB SITE:  Woody will publish board meeting minutes, current newsletters, and remove Expo information.

FEDERATION OF FLY FISHERS FLORIDA COUNCIL:  Ken reported that Tom Gadacz and Pat Damico were nominated for Florida Council, FFF board members and that he was nominated for President of the Florida Council. Election will be at the February Florida Council, FFF annual board meeting.

PROGRAMS:

November:  Brad Loman on baby tarpon.  Brad’s program was well received.  He’ll be invited to Pig Roast.

December:  No program.  Don Coleman Classic with Alan bringing chili. All members free to bring goodies as well.   Alan to contact Tarpon Coast , Tampa Bay and Mangrove Coast clubs.  Ken to provide e-mail contact info to Alan.  Mangrove Coast, according to Joe Burcell, has 17-18 members coming with Leslie Hand cooking!  A good time will be had by all.

February:  Tie-a-thon  (No coordinator  for this event was named)

March:  Brad Loman on bass

HOG ROAST:  Board decided to Pig Roast at  FOP Hall facilities.  Woody is to confirm date/details.    Woody is to schedule FOP Hall for March 19 Hog Roast.  It was concluded that with so many old men needing to use the rest rooms frequently, it would be an imposition on the new owners of the Starkey place.  Also, we agreed that indoor facilities would save funds in event of rain.  Alan suggested we decorate the area and suggested themes included the 1990 beginning with a 20 year anniversary.  Board elected Alan Sewell Hog Roast chairperson and Ken Hofmeister auction/raffle chair.  Members volunteered to assist.   Alan is to contact John and Stacey Zientarski about cooking and helping.   It was decided to leave the Zientarski’s on the membership roll!

SFF’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY:  Board decided to give all current SFF members commemorative SFF Logo fly boxes in honor of the occasion.  Boxes with SFF Logo will feature “ Suncoast Fly Fishers, Founded in 1990.”  This text will be deleted and logo will remain for future sale item.  Alan and Paul to work with Enver on securing the boxes.

FEBRUARY 7, 2010

BILL JACKSON'S

Presiding:  Ken Hofmeister, President

Directors present: Roger Blanton, Joe Dail, Pat Damico, Tom Gadacz, Mark Hays, Richard Oldenski, Paul Sequira, Alan Sewell, and John Zientarski

Other members present: Woody Miller

Financial report:  Tom presented a written report showing a balance in January of $4,773.40. Receipts from the January auction were $605. The Board expressed its appreciation to Alan for acting as auctioneer, and favorable comments from members, especially new members, were reported.

Raffle report: None in January

Programs: February speaker will be Allen Wyatt. March will be Steve Gibson discussing Everglades fishing. Future presenters were discussed. Ken will explore the availability of John Kaminsky; Pat will contact Dusty Sprague; and Woody is attempting to contact a speaker on tarpon fishing. It was decided that the Club will reimburse presenters for their travel expenses.

Outings: Richard reported the largest fish caught at Pinellas Point was an 18-inch trout by Ron Kelly. The Board decided that, except for March when the casting clinic will be held in the morning and the fishing will be in the afternoon, the fishing contest at future outings will be confined to the morning before lunch and fish must be witnessed by a member to qualify; photo evidence will not be accepted because the purpose of the outings is to have members fish together. February will be at Ft. Desoto because of the possibility of a windy day; lunch will be at Arrowhead picnic grounds. The March be on March 20. Pat will conduct a casting clinic between 9:00 and 11:30 a.m., preceded by coffee and donuts and followed by a light lunch to be supplied by Richard and Mark. Fishing will be in the afternoon, and reports can be received by Richard up to the time of the Pig Roast, which will be held at John’s home between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. The April outing (4/17) will be fresh water. Various sites were discussed but a decision was deferred until closer to the date.

Old Business:

Conservation projects: Ken reported that Annie Hays has agreed to act as the Club’s point person and coordinate participation in conservation projects.

Rod building: Alan’s group has not decided when it wants to start the class; Ken stated that several patients from the VA Hospital are interested in participating.

Newsletter: Paul will include in future issues a welcome to new members.

Membership: Tom reported that 5 new members joined in January. Woody suggested a different color name tag for new members at meetings, and Ken will check with Bill Smith whether that is possible. A discussion was held about the exit interviews conducted by Board members with non-renewing members. No specific trends were noted. Most of them stated they dropped their membership because of press of business or other matters. No one reported that non-renewal was due to the requirement of FFF membership.

Web site: Woody has updated it. He found Tom Anderson to be helpful in resolving some problems with the program.

FFF: Ken will attend a board meeting in Orlando Feb. 21. John suggested that an effort be made to get more recognition from FFF of the Club’s Project Healing Waters activities.

Project Healing Waters: Pat reported that he has received indications of interest from Pensacola, Jacksonville and Orlando in starting programs. One has recently started in Miami, even though it has no fly club. He has spoken to a member of the Bradenton Yacht Club about conducting boating excursions for VA patients.

Everglades: The trip will be Apr. 30 to May 1, and Don Manning has arranged a rate of $71.50 per night at the La Quinta Inn. It will be up to interested members to make their own reservations, and there is no need for any kind of sign-up sheet.

Nominating Committee. John reported that the Committee has decided on its nominations for President and Vice President. Of the directors whose terms are expiring, Alan indicated his interest in serving another term. Richard, Mark, Paul, and John Rodgers do not want to be reelected, although each has agreed to continue performing their committee functions handling outing lunches (Richard and Mark), newsletter (Paul) and raffles and library (John). Other names of possible nominees were discussed.

Pig Roast. Mark was authorized to purchase a kayak with paddle, seat and anchor from Bill Jackson’s for $441. It will be raffled separately at $10 per ticket. Myron Hansen is contacting fly tiers to donate flies. Guides and merchants are being contacted, and if their donations exceed $100 in value, their business cards will be run in the newsletter for one year. A rod has been donated by Mark for the door prize. Ken was authorized to send complimentary tickets to past program presenters and their guests.

New Business:

Alan discussed the display booth he has for use at fishing shows, and he was authorized to purchase a long, folding table for that purpose.

Summary and Action Plans

Board Minutes
Rod and Reel

Minutes of Meeting of the Board of Directors of Suncoast Fly Fishers

Held on July 2, 2009, at Bill Jackson’s.

Presiding: Ken Hofmeister

Directors present: Roger Blanton, Joe Dail, Pat Damico, Mark Hays, Richard Oldenski, John Rodgers, Alan Sewell, Paul Sequira, John Zientarski

Other members present: None

Financial report: Treasurer Tom Gadacz could not be present, and his written report was reviewed. It shows a balance on June 31, 2009, of $4,250.84.

Raffle report: John R. received $34 in last month’s raffle. He has a good supply of raffle material, and he has a supply of the Don Coleman book which can be picked up by new members who have not received one.

Programs: The presentation in June by Deputy Barkley Daniels was well received. The Board authorized the President to present him with a Club cap and tickets to next year’s pig roast. Capt. Dave Chouinard is checking his availability for July or September, and he will advise Ken by Saturday. If he is unavailable for July, the program will be a tackle box demonstration by Mark Hays, Alan Sewell, Charlie Most, Mark Craig, and Tiger Vertregt. For August Richard has arranged for dermatologist Dr. James Connors to give a presentation on skin cancer. The Marine Institute has indicated it will furnish a representative for either September or October.

Outings: Richard reported that no snook were caught at the June outing, and the largest fish was a 17-inch ladyfish caught by Mark Craig. July will be at the Hillsborough River with lunch at Trout Creek. August will be Emerson Point. For September he and Mark will investigate the suitability of Lake Pasadena. October is the Carl Hansen tournament, and the Tampa club is to be the host.

Old Business:

PFDs - Ken reported that the sale price on PFDs is no longer available but the store will continue to give Club members a $10 discount. He will make that announcement at the membership meeting.

Liability insurance - Joe discussed the FFF proposed group liability insurance program. It would continue the same general liability coverage the Club now has, but at a lower premium, and would add additional coverage, especially Officers and Directors liability coverage which is not included in the general liability policy. This would protect officers and directors from potential exposure, including the necessity to defend against unwarranted lawsuits. It was noted that in the past some members have declined to serve on the Board because of the absence of such protection. Because of a deadline for indicating interest, he canvassed the Board by email and phone, and a majority voted to participate in the new plan. If the program does become available, the additional annual premium would be $325, and Ken will ask the membership at the June meeting to approve that expenditure.

Casting clinic - Pat will hold it on August 1, 2009, at Ft. DeSoto Park east beach, between 7:30 and 10:30 a.m. Richard will provide coffee, donuts and drinks.

Committees - Ken announced that the following members have agreed to chair committees: Casting, Charlie Most and Pat Damico; Shows and events, Woody Miller; Fly tying – Myron Hansen; Knot tying, Ken Doty; Outings, Richard Oldenski and Mark Hays; Project Healing Waters, Terry Kirkpatrick and John Craig; Publicity, Roger Blanton; Newsletter, Paul Sequira; Web site, Judd Sheets; FFF liaison, Pat Damico. There is no chair for the membership committee, and the Board was asked to come up with suggestions for that post.

New Business:

Name tags - Ken stated that some members have suggested that name tags be worn at meetings. After discussion, the Board decided that the expense of printed tags is not warranted, but that blank stick-on tags will be provided and members will be requested to fill out and wear them.

Show - The Club has been offered a free booth at the National Marine Manufacturers Association boat show September 11-13. After discussion, the consensus was that this type of event is not as desirable for the Club’s purposes as other shows in which we participate, and it was declined.

Bruce Richards Workshop -Pat Damico reported that the well-known fly tyer, line designer, and caster will be in Florida this summer and will be available for a full-day clinic for $500 plus the cost of a hotel room. No transportation expense would be involved. The Board authorized Pat to discuss with the Tampa club joint sponsorship whereby participants would be charged a fee which would hopefully cover the full cost, but the two clubs would share evenly any cost met by these fees.
